VOLUNTEERS and friends of Soul Food, a local charity helping homeless people and vulnerably housed, will be doing a sponsored walk tomorrow.

It is aimed at raising awareness about the plight of the homeless.

Soul Food is a voluntary organisation and relies solely on donations of food, clothes, toiletries and volunteers.

Soul Food serves a regular core of 10 to 15 rough sleepers and almost as many vulnerably housed. Outreach worker Angie Barnes said: “People who have been helped into accommodation but due to their mental health issues and their addictions are not able to look after themselves properly.

“Soul Food outreach workers help them to maintain their tenancies and also to continue to use soul Food until they are ready and able to look after themselves. “The issue of homelessness is a national crisis and Soul Food helps the local homeless and vulnerable in our community as do similar organisations across the UK.”

The sponsored walk is from Tyneham village to Weymouth via the coastal route, a 21-mile trek taking about six and a half hours.

Walkers Dave Burnett, Louis Phelps-Vandarl and Ross Browning have put sponsorship forms around the town.

Forms can be found at Bargain Brand Foods in Lynch Lane, Asda, Tides public house and Alf's fish & Chips shop to name a few.

Donations can be given to Soul Food on a Monday or Wednesday evening and Thursday or Friday morning.

The event was due to take place a few weeks ago but was cancelled due to bad weather.
