A CHRISTMAS treat was in store for former servicemen and women.

The monthly Veterans’ Rendezvous in Weymouth had a festive flavour for December as mince pies and Christmas cake was laid on.

It was all thanks to Weymouth and Portland Borough Council as well as the Dorset Cake Co. which supplied the treats.

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Kate Wheller dropped in with the festive treats and greetings and spoke to veterans who meet monthly at the RAFA Club in Maiden Street.

The council is a proud supporter of veterans’ events and its Armed Forces Day celebrations in June incorporating a parade and military vehicle display are among the biggest in the country.

Events this year commemorated the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Around 40,000 visited the borough over the main two days of events.

Cllr Wheller said: “It fills me with pride to have such a great relationship with the veterans’ community and many other hard working associations.

“I applaud them for their wonderful support at Weymouth’s Armed Forces Day celebrations and a number of memorial events throughout the year.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to Dorset Cake Co. for supplying the Christmas delights for the veterans’ once again this year, celebrating 20 years of supporting this event.”

The 2015 Weymouth and Portland Armed Forces Day celebrations will take place from June 20 to June 26.
