‘I DON’T believe it!’ – TV star Richard Wilson met a Dorset fossil hunter on his trip along the Jurassic Coast.

As part of his travels around the UK using nothing but the Shell Guides to help him, Richard Wilson, of One Foot in the Grave fame, met fossil hunter Kevan Sheehan in Osmington to discuss the fossil history of Dorset’s iconic coastline.

The encounter was on ITV on Monday as part of the new series Richard Wilson On the Road.

Mr Sheehan, 69, painstakingly unearthed the fossilised remains of a huge prehistoric marine reptile from the cliffs near his Osmington Mills home, more than six years ago.

The massive pliosaur, which experts pieced back together, was named Kevan in his honour. The 25 parts together form an 8.5ft long jaw of a 60ft long beast that existed 150 million years ago.

It resides at Dorset County Museum in Dorchester.

Richard Wilson also made stops at Studland Bay and the Great Globe at Swanage – one of the world’s largest stone spheres.

Mr Sheehan said the pair spoke about the pliosaur find, the Jurassic Coast and Dorset.

Mr Sheehan said: “This fossil I found, it’s given me hours of fun.

“I thought we’d squeezed enough out, but actually it’s good because it draws attention to the Jurassic Coast.”

The pair did some filming on the beach at Osmington and had a cup of tea at Mr Sheehan’s cafe. After the filming Mr Wilson joined locals in the pub.

Mr Sheehan said: “He is a very sweet man – he was signing everyone’s autograph. He is good fun. He is as he comes across on the television – a very cultured man.”

Mr Sheehan gave him a gift of an old turn-of-the-century book on Weymouth to go with the collection of Shell Guides. The series can be seen on ITV player online.
