COFFEE, cakes and plants will be all the rage when the first Dorset Farmers’ Market rolls into Weymouth.

Next week will see the first ever market coming to the town on Friday April 24 from 9am to 2pm.

Located in St Thomas Street in the town centre, the market will feature 17 stalls featuring local farm goodies from across the county.

This won’t just be a one-off event either, the Dorset Farmers’ Market will take place on the fourth Friday of every month.

Weymouth will be the latest host town for the popular event which already has monthly spots in various locations including Poundbury, Dorchester and Bridport.

They also run special one-off events as well.

The market will see a host of tasty local treats and produce from traders including: Bridge Farm, Dorset Coffee Co, Dorset herbals, Dorset Honey and Cider, Dorset Shellfish, Mere Fish, Purbeck Ice Cream, Winterborne Game and Woolsery Cheese.

The market is run as a not-for-profit organisation by the producers, for the producers and is committed to creating and supporting a viable local food economy for local farmers and growers.

Everything sold at the Dorset Farmers’ Market has been reared, grown, caught or made by the person selling it, usually within a 30 mile radius and using local ingredients where possible.

Jo Yeatman, Secretary of Dorset Farmers’ markets said “It is very exciting to see the Dorset Farmers’ Markets starting in Weymouth this month.

“It has taken several years of fairly frustrating negotiations to get to this stage, finally speeded up, and thanks to the Weymouth BID the market will come to town on April 24 for the first time.”

Nigel Reed, Manager of the Weymouth BID said they were delighted to announce the arrival of the market in the town.

He said: “The Dorset Farmers’ Market is exactly the sort of added attraction that we need in Weymouth, something different which will offer additional choice to the existing retail offer in Weymouth. We are also working with the Dorset Farmers’ Market on a local trading stall to be part of the market.”

He added: “Two of the Weymouth BID business objectives are to ‘improve the customer experience’ and to ‘increase footfall,’ the Dorset Farmers’ Market should hit both of these points and we will be comparing footfall data from our town centre cameras.”
