WEYMOUTH’S Old Town Hall has undergone a renovation.

Developers McCarthy and Stone, who are building in the area, wanted to 'give something back' to the community and gave the building a major re-fit.

They funded a makeover of the Grade II listed building, which it is now using as a sales office for its Harbour Lights Court retirement development.

Selwyn Williams, director and guardian of the Old Town Hall, said: “The building needed a lot of work. It has had a major re-fit with the installation of a disabled toilet on the lower vestibule with new floor, new ceiling, plumbing, and electrics.

“We have also refurbished the Lower Hall by boxing in the service pipes and gas meter, painting the walls and ceilings, and refurbishing and staining the floor. It has also had a bit of a facelift with all new curtains, Candelabra lights, and an antique mirror which hangs over the feature fireplace.

“The work by McCarthy and Stone has moved the restoration of the Old Town Hall on immensely. They used their on-site sub-contractors to do the work, and with minimal disruption which we were really grateful for. It now means we can hire out the Lower Hall as a finished venue in its own right, and we can cater downstairs for those in community who require the use of an accessible toilet.”

The Town Hall was visited by Mayor of Weymouth and Portland, councillor Kate Wheller.

She said “I am very impressed by the community spirit shown by McCarthy and Stone not only in hiring the Old Town Hall, but in the changes and improvements they have made to the building. There is a lot of history behind the building and it has been a landmark in Weymouth for many years. It’s great to see its facilities being opened up to the wider community, and I hope it encourages many more visitors over the coming months.”

Cllr Weller was a Girl Guide at the hall her youth and even met her husband there.
