CARE home residents can now enjoy a new patio area- thanks to a Prince’s Trust team.

Students from the Prince’s Trust team at Weymouth College were approached by Buxton House care home in Weymouth to help them create a new outdoor area for residents.

The idea was to overhaul the area around the fish pond to allow residents to have wheelchair access to the site.

As well as installing the new patio, the Prince’s Trust volunteers also planted flower borders in the garden, which were elevated to make watering the plants easier for wheelchair users.

Staff at the home said that the garden area plays an important part in the home’s activities programme, with many residents involved in growing vegetables that are used in the home’s kitchen. Residents are currently involved in a runner bean competition to see who can grow the largest bean and the tallest plant.

Home Manager at Care South’s Buxton House, Byron Nadgie, said they were delighted to have been offered help by the Prince’s Trust team.

The Prince’s Trust engages young people on a 12-week personal development course of adventurous, charitable and work-based activity, and aims to develop their skills, boost their confidence and prepare them for work or further study.

The group said they were helped out by three local companies - HSS Tool Hire, Travis Perkins and Doonans- who gave them the equipment and materials to use to create the patio, all at an achievable budget for the team.

Tim Ellis, Prince's Trust programme leader said: “This was a labour intensive project that was always going to be difficult for an inexperienced team of students to complete on time.

“However, we are all thrilled how people gave their bit towards making the residents’ patio and garden area a success.

“This has been a good example of local community partnerships working well together for the benefit of a deserving community group.”

The team are now planning a bag packing day on the afternoon of Friday May 22 at Morrisons where they will be raising funds for the Buxton House garden.

The project took nine days to complete with the team working with a volunteer landscape gardener from Dorset Volunteering.
