LAST-MINUTE preparations are being made ahead of a free Weymouth street festival this bank holiday weekend.

Two days of family entertainment including live music, street theatre, stalls and games is being lined up for the second Fayre in the Square on Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25.

Held around the old harbourside in Hope Square and Trinity Road, the event organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth was first held last year as a way of filling the gap left by the Trawler Race Day celebrations.

It was also a way of encouraging more people to the Hope Square side of the harbour.

It was a tremendous success last year – helped in no small way by the fine weather – attracting around 10,000 people over the two days and raising £11,000 for local charities.

Organisers are hoping for a repeat of last year’s success and encourage everyone to visit.

The harbourside is likely to be buzzing over the two days as the outdoor Quayside Music Festival is being held outside the Rendezvous at the same time.

Dennis Corbett from the Rotary Club said: “It’s just a few days to what has become one of Weymouth’s major events.

“Everything is now in place, with a record number of stalls, covering just about everyone’s needs or interest.

“As with last year, we have printed 10,000 copies of a comprehensive programme which lists all of the stage events and what time the performers are on stage.

“While the programmes are offered free of charge, our motto this year is ‘give us a quid’”.

Mr Corbett added: “As most people know there are two objectives to the Fayre – namely, create two fun-filled days of entertainment for a family-orientated audience, and raise as much money as possible for local charities and good causes.

“Last year we gave away £11,000, but this year with your help, the Rotary Club of Weymouth hopes to exceed last year’s great effort.”

The event features non-stop entertainment from 10.30am to 6.30pm on both Sunday and Monday featuring a wide cross section of local bands and entertainers on stage, plus with street performers and children’s activities.

Performers include: Dorset Wrecks, Shooter, Skint Imperials, WOW, Acoustic Rooster, Average Wyke Band and the Weymouth Ukuleleans.

Food and drink will be available including at Rotary HQ, Pilgrim House. Good causes that wish to be considered for a donation from this year’s Fayre in the Square can contact 01305 761828.
