A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl from Weymouth will be swapping school for cycling as she gears up for a 10-mile sponsored bike ride from Weymouth to Portland.

Delilah Jarman, who is in reception class at Radipole Junior School, has recently learnt to ride without stabilisers and will be biking from Weymouth to Portland with her family on Wednesday, May 27.

She will be raising money for two projects in Romania which involve her grandfather Malcolm Jarman, 60, who has been visiting the European country since 1992.

The two projects Malcolm has been helping with include the Casa Noastre children's home in the city of Arad, and Mocrea psychiatric hospital 30 miles north of Arad.

Malcolm said Delilah is pleased to play her part in fundraising and when her family suggested the idea she was excited to give the cycle ride a go.

He added: “Delilah will be cycling from the top of Ridgeway Hill in Weymouth to the Cove House Inn in Chiswell on Portland, a distance of exactly 10 miles, with me, my wife Janie and her dad Matthew.

“Delilah's mum Claire will also be cheering us on and Delilah has a great support team.

“She knows what she will be raising money for and she understands that the seven children at the Romanian children's home have no parents to be with.

“I also plan to work alongside staff at the hospital in July this year, culminating in an open day which aims to reduce the isolation of the rural hospital and to encourage links for the 150 patients with their local community.

“We are so pleased Delilah wants to help and would encourage anyone who wants to support us, donate to the fundraiser or come and cheer us on on the day to get in touch.”

Delilah and her family will be taking on the cycle ride on Wednesday, May 27 at midday and hope to be finished by 3pm at Portland.

Anyone wanting to donate to Delilah's fundraiser should call Claire on 07803 292834 or Malcolm on 07736 299888.
