IT’S full steam ahead for a popular show which returns this summer.

The Chickerell Steam and Vintage Show, which started out on Portland 15 years ago and has grown into a huge entertainment showcase, will be held on the weekend of July 4 and 5 at Moor Farm, Knights in the Bottom.

Visitors can expect to see a vast array of classic and vintage cars, motorbikes, tractors, stationary engines, commercial and military vehicles.

There will be miniature steam engines along with seven full size ones including special guests – the Burrell Showman’s engine ‘Wait & See’ and ‘Raja’, once owned by famous travelling showmen Wombwell & Bostock.

There will also be arts and crafts, model boats on the lake and a remote-controlled tank display.

Displays will showcase vehicles, the Amber Lights Majorettes and the Dorset Axemen. Sideshows include The Kondinis – fire eating, escapology and illusionists – and the Portsmouth Wild West Association.

There will also be trade stalls, food and drink outlets, funfair, face painting and live music.

The show is sponsored by a number of firms and organised by an army of volunteers who work under the direction of event co-ordinator, Andy Spracklen.

Mr Spracklen said: “I have a passion for all things steam and vintage and very much enjoy being part of such a long standing local show. Having grown up in and around the Chickerell area it is satisfying to be able to bring something back to the community.

“This year’s show is shaping up to be the best so far, with over 400 exhibits already booked and it has all the makings of a great day out.”

The show started out as a fete on Portland to raise money for a local church.

The event had to move to a new location in Chickerell for 2011.

The site is easily accessible from the B3157.

The event is open to the public from 10am each day.

Ticket prices on the gate are £6 for adults and £3 for children. Pre-book camping via Samantha Spracklen on 01305 815793 or email info.chickerell@gmail.com
