BUSKING was the theme of the day as Weymouth celebrated National Busking Day as part of an annual event raising more than £800 for charity.

Weymouth and Portland Lions Club held their annual Street Busk event on Saturday and tied in the event with National Busking Day.

The event saw live music performers outside NatWest Bank on St Thomas Street and was headlined by the band ‘Replay’, which is fronted by former Lions president Norman Stagles.

Thanks to generous donations from passersby the street busk raised £831 for the Lions charity fund.

Funds raised by the Lions are mainly spent in the local community and they have recently made a grant of £500 to help fund a defibrillator which will be placed at the Pavilion.

Norman Apps, public relations officer at Weymouth and Portland Lions Club, said: “The street busk event has been taking place in the town for at least 20 years and this year it gave everyone’s spirits a lift.

“The event gave the town centre a really wonderful atmosphere and that can only be a good thing as we approach the start of the holiday season.

“Everyone in the town was greeted by music as they went about their business and you could see this really cheered some people up.”

Mr Apps added that the Lions would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who visited the street busk event over the weekend and to all that had donated.

He said: “Everyone’s donations mean we can carry on doing what we’re doing and helping support those less fortunate than us.

“Here at the Lions we have all had a great life and we simply want to give something back to the community.”

The Lions have three more upcoming fundraising events, including free open air concerts from the Lions Youth Brass Band in Weymouth on Saturday, July 25 and on Portland on Monday July 27.

In addition, people will be offered the chance to step back in time with a 1950s and 1960s dance headlined by Replay at Weymouth Pavilion on July 31.

A charity golf day will also be held in Weymouth on Friday, August 7.
