CELEBRATING the 100th year of the formation of the WI in the UK, thousands of carpet bedding plants have been planted out in a flora bed at Greenhill Gardens in Weymouth.

Using a variety of plants, the Borough Council’s gardeners have skilfully replicated the organisation’s logo in a crescent shaped bed that is situated in the centre of the gardens.

The Wyke Regis WI was formed in 1929 and by the 1930s its members had clubbed together to buy a hall in Gallwey Road, which was quite an achievement for women at that time.

The Wyke Regis WI has been busy with many events to mark the centenary, including outings, cream teas, barbecue in its recently reclaimed courtyard at their hall in Wyke.

They also assist in community activities, such as the forthcoming All Saints School Music and Arts Event in September and the Wyke Christmas Fair in December.

Ann May, President of Wyke Regis WI said: "I had the idea of asking the Borough Council if you they would consider growing the WI logo at Greenhill as part of our celebrations.

"We are grateful to the gardening team for their skills and dedication in growing the WI logo.

"It brings to fruition the idea of promoting our centenary to the public in Weymouth.

"We look forward to gathering some of our members, the gardeners and Friends of Greenhill Garden to see the finished display."

The official unveiling of the carpet bedding design by Ann May, President of Wyke Regis WI, is on July 30 at 10am.
