A WEYMOUTH radio star is stepping down from his volunteering work at AIR FM.

Carl Greenham, station manager at AIR 107.2FM, is stepping down from the role after four years.

Although he will still be working at Westfield College, which has been his full time job alongside his radio role, he will be taking a back seat at the community radio station in the future.

Mr Greenham, 36, will be continuing to teach at Westfield, where the FM station is based, including teaching students to use the radio equipment, so he will still be seen around the station.

Everyone that works at AIR is a volunteer.

Today (weds 19) is his last official day and he will be spending it at Weymouth Carnival on the carnival beach stage, run by AIR FM, playing live music to keep the party atmosphere going all day. He will also be on the radio station’s carnival float ‘Air Tight.’

Mr Greenham said he was stepping down from the role with ‘mixed emotions,’ saying he was very proud of what the station had achieved and paying a special tribute to all the wonderful volunteers.

He said: “Ever since I joined Westfield it’s been leading up to get the station on FM. It’s been part of my life for quite a long time.

“It’s mixed emotions. I’m really proud of what we have achieved, hopefully setting up a legacy.

“We have an amazing team to run it. It’s bigger than any one individual.”

He added that the station was in a great place financially too and had lots of volunteers to help out.

Mr Greenham said: “It’s a nice time to step down and let someone else take on the reins.”

Mr Greenham gave a huge thank you to everyone at the station, adding that it had been a “fantastic journey.”

He said: “I will miss it. I will miss all the volunteers. I will still be around and I will still be a supporter of the station”

Mr Greenham said he was certain the station would get bigger and bigger.

He said: “The radio station has never been in a more sustainable position, so I feel now is the perfect time to allow others the opportunity to take over the reins and continue building on the great work. The station, I'm sure, will just keep getting better and better.

“Thank you to all the hard working volunteers who regularly give up their spare time to support AIR and make the station what it is today. You are all amazing and without you the station is nothing. I will miss all of you.”
