BIKERS taking part in Weymouth’s Beach Motocross Weekend are getting revved up as the popular fundraiser makes a return to the town.

Weymouth and Portland Lions in partnership with Purbeck Motocross Club have drawn up an action-packed weekend of entertainment on the Esplanade on October 10 and 11 in aid of charity.

Weymouth BID is backing the Beach Motocross fundraiser by match funding private sponsors of the event.

Motocross organising chairman Richard Burgess said joining with sponsors Weymouth BID has enabled the Lions to put on a ‘much larger programme of exciting entertainment’ as well as the traditional ‘thrill a minute’ raceday on Sunday.

Approximately 300 motocross bikes will take to the beach for Sunday’s main Motocross race.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Waterside Holiday Group and local developers, The Imago Developments Ltd, a top UK Stunt Team has been booked to appear.

On Saturday there will be performances from Weymouth’s Odyssey Majorettes, and Gorillaman, who will also be entertaining the crowds both on and off his quadbike on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

There will be a motocross demonstration as a taster for Sundays big event.

The star of the show is Jamie Squibb and his stunt display team doing two sessions on the beach launching themselves from their mobile ramps.

An added attraction this year is ‘Bartlett’s Beach Buggy’, offering the chance to have a car ride on Weymouth’s golden sands.

Also new this year is a motorbike rally by the ‘Thursday Night crowd’ of motorcyclists led by Brian Coombes at The Clock on Sunday.

Lions President Les Board said: “We could not put on an event of this size and complexity without the help of many local businesses and individuals who help in kind – as well as our formal sponsors.

“So thanks to all, whether you’ve loaned us a giant earth-mover or just put 50p in our collecting buckets.”

Steve Newstead, Chair of the Weymouth BID, said the organisation is delighted to be supporting the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club Motocross for the second year.

He added: “One of the BID’s main aims is to encourage more visitors to come to Weymouth during the off season months.

“Motocross is a well-established and popular Weymouth event and we are very happy to provide support which will extend the weekend and include more exciting attractions.”
