AN INFANT school is celebrating its ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted.

Wyke Regis Nursery and Infant School, part of the Wyke Regis Primary Federation, was inspected last month..

This has seen the school upgraded from a ‘Requires Improvement’ rating in 2014 and means that now both the infant school, and Wyke Regis Junior School are rated 'Good' by Ofsted.

The report praised the school for good teaching, strong leadership, governor support, good behaviour of pupils, improved attendance from the last report and for how much children enjoy attending the school.

The report states: “The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good.

"It includes some strong features and ensures that pupils make good progress from different starting points.

“Pupils’ good behaviour and effort in learning are consistently good.

"They have been much improved in recent terms and now support their better progress.

“Pupils thoroughly enjoy school, are keen to learn and get along very well together and with staff. As a result attendance is much improved and now matches the national average.”

Head of Federation, Wanda Bolton, said the whole school was delighted with the report and paid tribute to the school community for helping to make it happy.

She said: “We’re delighted really.

“The staff work extremely hard but also the governing body have been very productive in their role, making sure they do more and the parents have really got on board.”

Mrs Bolton said that she was especially pleased that Ofsted noted improved attendance at the school.

She said: “There was a bit about attendance.

“That was one of the areas from the last Ofsted to improve on and we’re delighted with that and that’s down to the parents supporting us. As a school we need parents' support as well.”

Mrs Bolton said that between the two schools, the juniors and the infants, there is a real community feel which has contributed to the two schools now being rated good.

She said: “I do think we have got a real community feel.

“We’re the Wyke Regis Federation. The two schools are one, we work very closely together as one federation.

“The children all love coming to school. The teachers plan a very engaging curriculum for them.”

The report identified areas that needed to be addressed so that the school could be rated ‘Outstanding’ in future.

It said: “A few teachers do not have all the skills they need to adapt tasks and move pupils’ learning on more quickly in lessons, particularly the most able."

“On occasion, teachers’ questioning does not extend pupils’ thinking and deepen their understanding well enough.”

The report also stated that the school needs to develop the ability of pupils to spell words accurately and that work across the range of subjects does not always fully extend and make best use of their knowledge, skills and understanding in English and maths.
