SPRING bank holiday is set to see crowds flock to Hope Square and Weymouth harbourside for the third Fayre in the Square festival.

The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth and was first held in 2014 as a way of filling the gap left by the Trawler Race Day celebrations.

Held around the old harbourside in Hope Square and Trinity Road and billed as two days on non-stop family entertainment, the last Fayre in the Square left organisers overwhelmed for a second year running. More than £16,000 was raised and approximately 15,000 people visited the harbourside.

The idea behind the event is to create more focus on Hope Square and to remind both locals and tourists what it has to offer.

The event includes live music, street theatre and dozens of stalls along the harbourside.

Last year saw the introduction of a grand tombola which received more than £2,500 worth of donations.

Dennis Corbett, one of the organisers of the event, said: "Once again the Rotary of Weymouth is getting prepared for the annual Fayre in the Square event centred around Hope Square and Trinity Street. As before the fayre will be held over the main spring bank holiday weekend, Sunday, May 29 and Monday, May 30.

"This year for the first time rotary are combining with the Tall Ship Pelican to have a launch party on Saturday, May 28. This will be an all ticket event limited to around 100 with the emphasis being on a family evening, to include food and entertainment with a cash bar for the adults.

"The fayre will be providing non-stop music in Hope Square from 10am until 6pm on both days, with stalls and entertainment for families providing something for everyone.

"Last year the Rotary Club gave away £16,000 to local good causes as a result of everyone's generosity, so please come this year and help us help others.

"This year we have two new innovations. The event's new mascot Fitsy Bear will be around town and generally making a nuisance of himself, as Fitsy is a self proclaimed 'naughty bear' so everyone watch out.

"As his first official job Fitsy can be seen on the Tall Ship Pelican with a group of improbable sailors promoting the launch of this year's event."

Dennis added: "We will of course be welcoming any requests for help from local good causes.
These would need to be with us no later than Friday, June 3 to give us time to see what we have to give away this year."
