MORE than 800 fundraisers lit up the streets of Weymouth on Saturday night as part of the 10th annual Midnight Walk, organised by Weldmar Hospicecare Trust.

The walkers raised more than £75,000 for Weldmar and eligible Gift Aid is still yet to be added.

The popular annual event sees women take part in one of three routes, starting and ending at Weymouth College.

Participants journey along the seafront dressed in colourful clothing and flashing lights.

Over the course of its 10 year history, the event has raised nearly £750,000 for Weldmar, with more than 75,000 women taking part to date.

Matt Smith, Weldmar fundraising manager, said: "The atmosphere in our 10th year was absolutely fantastic and everyone joined in with the spirit of the night and put their best feet forward.

"The sight of more than 800 flashing bunny ears spilling onto the seafront was just incredible.

"This total is a phenomenal amount and will mean that we can continue our care to patients in the comfort of their own homes, through our wellbeing centres and as in-patients at Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester."

Walkers were treated to food and a bar before they set off at midnight, as well as a disco and live music from Carissa Berry.

Weldmar patient Gill Harler took to the stage before the ladies set off in order to thank them for their fundraising efforts.

"It was lovely to be part of such a landmark event," said participant Jan Hinton.

"Who thought, I wonder, that the Midnight Walk would get bigger and better every year?

"It was a very special night for all of us and a privilege to be part of the 10 years celebration."

As well as those taking part in the walk, there were more than 100 volunteers involved in running the event, including helping out as marshals or with registering the participants.

Matt added: "We would like to thank each and every walker, volunteer, sponsor and supporter, not just this year but since our first walk back in 2007 for helping the Midnight Walk celebrate its 10 years.

"We are already excited for some new changes in 2017 and hope to see some returning faces as well as new supporters take part in this fantastic event."
