THREE men have been arrested after an incident in Weymouth town centre.

Police were called at around 2pm on Saturday to reports of an assault.

It happened off King Street, close to Weymouth train station.

Officers sealed off Upway Street as they gathered evidence.

Today, a police spokesman said that three men, one aged 44 and two aged 19, were arrested on suspicion of assault.

A 23-year-old man, also from Weymouth, was taken to Dorset County Hospital with a fractured eye socket.

Detective Sergeant Nicky Jenkins, of Weymouth CID, said: “Even though arrests have been made, I am appealing for any witnesses to the incident, who have not yet spoken with police, to come forward to enable us to find out exactly what happened.”

There were five police cars, a police van and paramedics on scene. Officers were also posted at the train station.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said: "There were quite a few people outside calling the police."

One onlooker said she first heard something was going on around 2pm.

Another person, who did not wish to be named said: “There’s a lot of police in the town as well so I was wondering what was going on.”

A resident on King Street said: “All I heard was the police sirens and cars. I thought nothing of it and then opened my curtains and then I saw.”
