A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "At approximately 5.15pm a pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision with a grey VW van on Newstead Road. The pedestrian was an 11-year-old local girl who was crossing the road. She sustained serious head and torso injuries and was flown to Southampton Hospital by air ambulance along with her mother.

A spokesman for the South Western Ambulance Service Trust  last  night said the girl was in a stable condition.

The spokesman said: “We were called to reports that someone had been hit by a car at 5.10pm.

“We sent a first responder, a crew and the air ambulance to the scene. She is in a stable condition but has stomach and arm injuries.”

Eyewitnesses reported a number of police cars were quick to attend the scene and cordon off the road.

A resident of the road, who didn't want to be named, said: “It happened just as I got back. The road was already all shut off. I was told she ran into the road and didn’t see the car coming.”
