A THREATENED major fundraising event for a community library was saved at the final moment.

Trustees of the Friends of Wool Community Library felt their hearts sink when their annual quiz evening - a major fundraising event in the calendar - was threatened by a heating failure in the main hall of the D’Urberville Centre in Wool.

The event was also held to coincide with World Book Night.

David Smith, one of the trustees, said: "Firstly we had to close the library for over a week through circumstance beyond our control and then we nearly had our big quiz event derailed because all the heaters at our venue were out of commission.

"As temperatures were forecast to plummet on the Saturday evening and the event a total sell-out, an SoS went out and local firm A1 Toolhire in Wareham who saved the day with a generous concession on the loan of two portable gas heaters.

"The centre management committee accepted a lower fee for the hire of the hall so that the heater hire cost could be covered."

Wool Community Library has built up a strong following in the community serving not just Wool, East Burton and Bovington but other neighbouring villages - so much so that all 72 tickets had been sold before the night.

Each quiz question was projected on the wall with a countdown clock wiping it after 30 seconds and a second projector kept pace on the next wall with the round by round scores.

It was a competitive evening that led to a tie-break 'The Walkers' and 'The Inscrutables'.

Generous in victory, The Walkers immediately donated the cash prize back to the library funds.

Competitors also took part in a raffle with prizes supplied with local businesses.

The evening raised a record-breaking amount of more than £300.

Wool Community Library is run entirely by volunteers and has been running successfully for the community since January 2013 by the Friends of Wool Library.

All participants also enjoyed a large Ploughman’s supper prepared by a volunteer catering team.

Sue Kerr, chairman of the Friends of Wool Library, who organised the quiz with husband, Andrew and scorer Peter Green said: “This was a great team effort and a very cheering end to a difficult week for the library as we had not be able to open the library for three sessions because of a fault on the BT system putting our computers, self-service machine and printers out of action.

"Thankfully the problem was fixed on April 25. We have reopened and look forward to business as normal."
