A former children's entertainment centre in Weymouth could be transformed into a high-class restaurant.

Sharky's play warehouse on the harbourside closed in February after more than 20 years of business.

Tough trading conditions over the past three years including rising business rates, increased rent and car parking fees, plus 'diminishing customer numbers' were blamed for the closure.

Owner of DJ Property, Mickey Jones, and landlord of the site, said it was sad to see the business close but he has strong hopes for its future.

Brothers-in-law, Keith Rupp and Jason Seale purchased Sharky’s in 2007, when the play centre was the only indoor soft play facility in Weymouth.

It used to be run by Tony and Sally Harris when it also included the Deep Sea Adventure museum.

But when an opportunity arose within the current lease, the owners decided "the time was right" to close Sharky's Weymouth.

Facilities now continue at the Fun Factory including soft play and an extended outdoor play area. There is also free car parking, free wi-fi and a larger café.

Mr Jones said: "The Sharky's business model was no longer working at that location.

"The reason it could no longer operate was mainly due to crippling business rates, increased rent and car parking issues and therefore the business was struggling to increase the number of customers.

"It is one of the best locations on that side of the harbour. It has stunning views and a paved area at the front and I don't want it to be forgotten about and become an eye-sore.

"I am currently working on a planning application to create a very high-class restaurant on the first floor. I am looking at a number of options for the other floors - no decision has yet been made but we are looking at the possibility of residential units.

"The town centre is a great location for retail but the Sharky's site isn't a retail location.

"I really want to do the best for Weymouth and I would love it to have a great high-class restaurant with a well-known and exceptionally-talented chef.

"I've been speaking to a few contacts, including chefs, who are interested in the business idea so watch this space."
