A lifeboat was launched to assist with the medical evacuation of an injured person on a sailing boat.

The RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched from Weymouth at 2pm to rendezvous with an 85’ sail training vessel.

The RNLI said it was the second medical evacuation from a sailing vessel in two days.

A crew member needed medical attention having fallen and sustained a suspected dislocated shoulder and broken arm.

The incident happened earlier in the morning when the vessel was approximately 35 miles from Portland Bill.

The boat was too large to bring into the harbour so the lifeboat was dispatched to get the crew member to medical aid.

The transfer of the causality onto the lifeboat took place near Balaclava Bay, Portland after the sail training vessel had made passage towards Weymouth.

The young sailor was given first aid treatment by the lifeboat crew before later being taken to Dorset County Hospital by ambulance.

The lifeboat returned to Weymouth Harbour at 2.45pm.
