Let's hear a roar for a local community group who have generously donated to the Dorset Echo Toy Appeal.

Weymouth and Portland Lions Club is helping us spread some festive cheer by donating £100 to help disadvantaged children this Christmas.

Norman Apps, press relations officer for the club said: "The Lions raise funds all year and we are very aware of what a special time Christmas is, particularly for the children.

"We don't want any child to miss out. It's a very worthwhile thing to do and it makes sure Christmas is special for everyone."

The Weymouth and Portland Lions Club was formed in 1969 under the Lions International motto ‘We Serve’, and currently had around 30 members from all walks of life who raise money to help those in need in the community.

Norman added: "This is a busy time for Weymouth and Portland Lions Club who are working hard preparing for their annual Christmas Show for senior citizens at the Pavilion next week, November 28, and also the Christmas Day Harbour Swim. Last year 400 brave souls took part raising over £20,000 for a whole host of national and local charities."

The club's generous donation will go towards gifts and toys to make sure every child has a reason to smile this Christmas Day.

Now in its 18th year, the Dorset Echo Toy appeal aims to make sure children across Dorset gets a visit from Father Christmas this festive season.

As well as business donations, members of the public can donate new gifts and toys to appeal bins found in stores across the county.

The gifts will then be collected and distributed before Christmas to children who would otherwise not have a present to open on Christmas morning.

Echo promotions manager Debbie Hellaby said: “Without the support of our readers and local businesses we would not be able to help to put smiles on all those families faces at Christmas, so thank you.”

Last year, the Dorset Echo raised more than £4,493 and collected hundreds of toys through the appeal and we are hoping to top that figure this year - ensuring even more children have a toy to open on Christmas Day.
