JAMES THORNHILL
OUTSIDE THE WHITE HART, WEYMOUTH TOWN CENTRE
This brown plaque is dedicated to the memory of decorative painter James Thornhill, a Dorset native who retired to the county in the 1720s.
Thornhill was a painter of historical subjects working in the Italian baroque tradition. He was responsible for some large-scale schemes of murals, including the "Painted Hall" at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich, the paintings on the inside of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and works at Chatsworth House and Wimpole Hall.
Thornhill was linked by marriage to another famous painter - his son-in-law was William Hogarth best known for his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode.
