KEEP your eyes on the Jurassic tower this weekend as 30 volunteers take on a hair-raising challenge to abseil down the 53-metre structure.

The final plans are being put into place for the Jurassic Skyline Charity Abseil, organised by Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Technical rescue specialists from Weymouth fire station will lead 30 members of the public, aged between 21 and 74, as they abseil from the iconic seafront landmark this Sunday (April 22).

Each volunteer will raise a minimum of £200 which will benefit five nominated charities - the Fire Fighters Charity, SafeWise, Merlin’s Magic Wand, the Sea Life Trust and Julia’s House Hospice.

The event was scheduled to take place last month but had to be postponed due to bad weather.

Firefighter Justin Rolls said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to do something pretty unique, and we are very grateful to the team at Jurassic Skyline for allowing us to use the attraction free of charge, while also providing support staff on the day.

“All of the firefighters and volunteers are giving up their own time to support the event, and our thanks also go to the Dorset Abilities Group, as they are opening up their base at the Old Ferry Terminal building to provide those taking part with toilets, a rest area and light refreshments.”

Tamsin Mutton-McKnight, general manager of Jurassic Skyline, said they were pleased to have the opportunity to support the abseil.

"We are proud to be involved with an event which is bringing members of the community together to raise funds for these worthy local causes,” she said.
