I was very disappointed at the tone of the headline in your letters column on Saturday “Ignoring our views”.

Your correspondent claimed that over 40 per cent wanted a return to the fairy lights, so nearly 60 per cent did not.

At the time I was asked, I too favoured a return of the fairy lights, but it seems that modern lampposts are designed to break at the base if struck by a car, to save the lives of those inside.

If the mechanical engineers have calculated that they are not capable of supporting the weight of strings of lights in high winds, I don’t see any future in demanding that they do.

The consultation meeting I attended was highly professional and well thought through. I asked the question about flashing lights and epilepsy and received a well researched and reassuring reply.

A display of energy efficient LED lights with adaptable colour patterns sounds great.

If the flashing is too much, it can be toned down to more gentle colour ripples. Soothing enough for all visitors and original enough to attract a few new ones.
