A FORMER drug addict who has turned his life around is ready for his next big challenge - the London Marathon.

Joseph Heffell knows all about being at rock bottom from when he lived on the streets, and now he's stepping out to help those less fortunate.

As well as being a drug and alcohol adviser for the charity EDP in Weymouth - formerly DDAAS - Mr Heffell gives up his time at weekends to distribute soup to homeless people through his involvement with the Weymouth Family Church.

All the money he raises from his marathon challenge will go towards buying provisions for the soup kitchen.

Mr Heffell, 47, of Chickerell Road, Weymouth, said: "I'm originally from Dundee but I lived in London for a while.

"I was in a real mess. I had problems with heroin and alcohol and I lived on the streets.

"I came to Weymouth about 15-20 years ago in a bid to turn my life around.

"I succeeded with the help of the Cove House, a Christian-run centre.

"I've moved on a lot since then. I'm married now and have two children."

He added: "The soup runs were started a few years ago and the Weymouth Family Church has taken it on in the past few months.

"It's basically run out the back of a car at Westham Bridge and occasionally we cook meals like chilli con carne."

Mr Heffell is no stranger to running as he is a member of Weymouth St Paul's Harriers and a coach to the younger members.

He has taken part in a number of local and regional races including the Portland 10, the Egdon Easy, and more recently the Grizzly, a tough 20-mile multi-terrain race in Devon.

But this will be the first time Mr Heffell will be taking part in the London Marathon.

"I've applied four times before and this year I was successful so I'm really looking forward to it," Mr Heffell said.

"I've managed to turn things around in my life now this is me helping others."
