A LONE dolphin in Portland is proving to be ‘some fin’ special after being filmed interacting with sailors.

Clet, a male bottlenose dolphin, sighted in Portland waters earlier this week has been captured once again in new images.

The dolphin is well known for travelling long distances and is recognisable by his distinctive scarring on his dorsal fin.

Clet has been sighted in the past travelling along Scottish, Welsh and Irish shores.

He has also made headlines for showing aggressive behaviour towards swimmers.

Footage and photos captured by Luke Johnson, however, shows a more playful side to the dolphin.

Luke, chief instructor of water sports at PGL, spotted Clet on Wednesday whilst out in Portland Harbour as part of a training session with staff.

PGL provides school activity courses and summer camps for children.

Luke said: “The dolphin came for about 30 minutes and then it disappeared. Then it came back for another 10 minutes 40 minutes later.

“We were in Portland Harbour, halfway between the Academy and the harbour wall.

“I was running the coaching session from a sailing boat. My colleague was in a speedboat next to us and he just said, ‘There’s a dolphin here’.

“It started swimming in between us and underneath the boat.

“We started sailing off it started following us.

“We came to a standstill and it went to the front of the boat and rolled around.

“It came to the back of the boat, too. It seemed to really like the noise of the engine.”

Prior to being spotted in Portland, Clet was last seen off the Isle of Mull in December.

Dr Conor Ryan, sightings and strandings officer at the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, suggested Clet had since acquired new rake marks, indicating recent aggressive interactions with other bottlenose dolphins.

Images and footage recorded by Luke show Clet swimming alongside the boat and breaching the surface on a number of occasions.

Luke said they were more or less the only people out in harbour waters at the time.

He said: “For me, it was just absolutely fantastic. It was once in a lifetime. I hope to see him again.

“I still haven’t got over it really.”
