VOLUNTEERS are needed for this year’s Weymouth Carnival.

Calls for money are still ongoing with the event very much in the balance but organisers are now searching for volunteers.

Garry French, who has recently joined the carnival committee, is in charge of manpower for the carnival.

He said: “We need volunteers to help in the lead up to the Carnival and on the day especially anyone who would like to help as a steward or a marshal on Carnival Day.”

There has been some good news in terms of staffing the event with local businessman, Dan Wilson of Event Security Southern pledging his support to this year’s event.

Mr Wilson said: “We got involved in Weymouth Carnival last year for the first time, it’s a great event and it would be a massive loss to the town if it doesn’t happen.

“We will be working with Weymouth Carnival Committee members to deliver a range of training to the stewards to make sure that they can safely carry out their roles."

Last week saw the carnival team launch a Crowdfunder page in a bid to raise £18,000 by May 12 and the page has already raised over £1,500.

Mr French wanted to assure people no experience is necessary to volunteer as training will be provided.

He said: “I will personally reply to all those who wish to volunteer and send a form to complete and send back on line or by post. This form shows the different volunteering options and is a simple tick box form.

“If you have experience in stewarding or marshalling that would be great but don't worry as training will be given. This is an opportunity to be involved in a really great day for the town and be part of a tradition which is over 50 years old. So whatever time you can spare please help us by volunteering."

He also wanted to urge people to sign up to join the carnival committee.

He said: “It's also not too late to volunteer to be on the Carnival Committee. Our committee members are busy covering various roles and could always do with an extra pair of hands and fresh ideas.”
