HISTORIC locomotives dating back to the 1940s are heading for Weymouth this summer.

Heritage rail operator The Railway Touring Company has announced the dates for its seaside service from London Victoria and stations en route to Bournemouth and Weymouth.

The Dorset Coast Express steam train will run on five Wednesdays between July 22 and September 9, taking passengers on a nostalgic journey with the promise of steam, sand, sea, and with any luck, sun.

Magnificent preserved locomotives scheduled to haul The Dorset Coast Express on different dates, include "Pacific" locos Battle of Britain class No. 34067 Tangmere built in 1947 and Britannia class No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell built in 1951.

Steaming into Weymouth at approximately 13.45, The Dorset Coast Express will turn heads as it recreates the "golden age" of steam.

The Dorset Coast Express is one of a number of steam trains offering a chance to see some of Britain’s finest surviving locomotives in action along routes frequented in their heyday.

The Railway Touring Company’s summer steam programme features more than a dozen magnificent "Giants of Steam" hauling trains over some of Britain’s most exciting and scenic rail routes.
