Firefighters were called to a kitchen fire and a shed fire in two separate incidents in Weymouth.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were first called at 1.39pm to a kitchen fire in a pub on New Bond Street in the town centre yesterday.

Two crews from Weymouth and Portland were mobilised to the incident and arrived at the scene within six minutes. On arrival, firefighters discovered the building had been evacuated and the fire had already been extinguished.

Crews inspected the area and discovered the fire had started due to a build up of fat on a cooker, before leaving shortly before 2pm.

Later in the day, just after 5pm, the service received a call reporting black smoke issuing from a shed at a property on Bedford Road.

One full-time crew and one retained crew from Weymouth attended the blaze and found the shed well alight on arrival.

Firefighters extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.

After an inspection by the crews, it was believed the cause was accidental by cinder from a controlled burn nearby.

The shed was completely destroyed in the fire, with an adjoining summer house suffering 30 per cent fire damage. There was also five per cent heat damage to the fascia of the property.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: “When having controlled burns please always remember to report them to Fire Control on 01305 753166 and ensure they are situated a safe distance away from all fences, hedges and houses to prevent fire spread.”
