WEYMOUTH'S all weather lifeboat was called to assist a solo yachtsman early on Saturday morning.

The yachtsman had called for assistance at around 4.50am after his engine failed and lack of wind meant his journey from the Channel Islands with an intended destination of Poole had taken him 36 hours.

The lifeboat arrived on the scene, around 10 miles south of Portland Bill and the volunteer crew went onto the yacht to transfer the skipper onto their vessel.

A spokesman for the Weymouth RNLI said the yacht skipper "very quickly fell asleep for the rest of the journey" as they towed his vessel back to Weymouth, arriving at around 9.30am.

The Wyke Regis Coastguard Rescue Team assisted the lifeboat and reported that the skipper was well but exhausted.
