A NEW independent ladies group in Dorchester is keen to offer a warm welcome to new members.

The Durnovarian Dames met on the second Thursday every month at the pavilion at the Recreation Ground, offering a chance for socialising, listening to speakers and crafts and other activities.

At the group’s latest meeting members got the chance to make their own Christmas wreaths to take home.

Jane Squirrell, the current chairwoman of the group, said that when it came to choosing speakers the group was keen to get people in who offered something a little bit different.

She said: “We have had people talk about London and next year we have got people talking about jewellery, flower arranging – it’s anything different that we can find.”

Jane said that the meetings were very informal and the independent nature of the group meant it was free to work in a way that suited members.

She said: “We are an independent ladies group that meets up with no rules and regulations and we just meet for a social occasion once a month.

“New members are always welcome.”

The group also does its bit for charity, with this year’s chosen cause the Go Girls support group for women with gynaecological cancers and their families.

Funds have been raised for the charity through a car boot sale and garden party and there are also sales tables at the meetings.

There are also sub-groups including a walking group, ladies that meet for lunch, members that have coffee together and occasional trips to the theatre.

The main group meets on the second Thursday of every month at the pavilion at the Weymouth Avenue Recreation Ground from 10am to noon with anyone interested in joining welcome to come along.
