BUSINESSES in Weymouth are being encouraged to support the harbour's Tall Ship Pelican and help fund the installation of a new engine and dry-dock.

A massive £113,000 is needed for the 70-year-old vessel which is due to sail to Hythe to undergo the essential works, as without she will not be able to continue sailing.

A significant amount of money has already been raised, but a shortfall of around £18,000 is still needed.

Therefore the charity Adventure Under Sail, who operate the Tall Ship Pelican, is appealing to local businesses to help ensure that Weymouth will not lose one of its most iconic assets.

The Pelican team have come up with a opportunity for businesses to support the fundraising and literally 'Fly the Flag' for Weymouth and their company.

For £250 plus VAT a limited number of business can have their company logo appear on a flag, which will be flown aboard Pelican on its UK and worldwide trips.

This opportunity will be sold on a first come, first served basis, and will require a minimum of ten businesses to sign up to be achievable.

Becky Simmons, marketing and fundraising officer, said: "Without this funding the charity cannot continue and hundreds of young people will miss out on the training we provide each year. We don't want to see the Weymouth skyline without Pelican. She is a great draw for tourists and at the heart of our community."

The Tall Ship Pelican enables personal and career development using skills acquired in sail training such as communication, leadership and teamwork.

The popular tourist attraction allows visitors to jump on board and become an integral part of the crew and get involved in all aspects of sailing Pelican including navigation, helming, night watches, setting sails and keeping her ship-shape.
