INTENSE downpours will strike Dorset later on today, according to a Met Office weather alert.

They have issued a yellow warning of rain for the South West, set to hit this afternoon bringing a chance of thunder.

Disruption to travel and localised flooding are possible as a result of the "intense thundery downpour".

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Warm and humid air has spread into roughly the southeastern quarter of the UK, bringing with it a risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

"Where thunderstorms occur torrential rain and frequent lightning are expected.

"Thirty mm or more of rain could fall in an hour and locally in excess of 50 mm is possible in two or three hours."
