A MAGICAL torchlight procession will light up Weymouth before the town’s big carnival.

Organisers planning the August extravaganza, which this year will take place for the first time over two days, are proud to be presenting an evening torchlight procession on Tuesday, August 16.

They are inviting the public to light a torch in what will be a “moving tribute to absent loved ones” for an event supporting Weldmar Hospicecare Trust. It will take place at about 8pm on Weymouth seafront.

Weymouth Carnival Chairman Ryan Hope said: “We strongly recommend you pre-order torches, as spaces are very limited.

“We’re proud to be supporting Weldmar with this event with torches available at a cost of £5. £1 from each sale will be going to support our chosen charity.”

Torches will only be sold to those over 16. Under 16s either purchasing torch or arriving to collect a pre-ordered torch must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Glow sticks and flashing lights will be available for children.

The procession will start from a position on the Esplanade by the Pier Bandstand. The route will be along the beach to a position by the slipway adjacent to the north end of Alexandra Gardens.

The procession will be held before the main day of Weymouth Carnival, Wednesday August 17.

Aerial displays including the world-famous Red Arrows, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, have been lined up. There also be games and sideshows, music and other family entertainment before the grand procession of floats and walking entries.

Leading the parade will be the carnival queen, who this year is Claudia Moore. Joining her will be teen princess Emma Cottingham and junior princess Maisie Sheridan
