A WEYMOUTH department store has had a busy month of pink themed fun to raise money for breast cancer.

Throughout the year, Debenhams raise money for various causes, with Breast Cancer Now being the chosen charity for the month of October.

So far, the store has raised £1388 for the charity, smashing its £750 target and with a number of different events still to go.

On Saturday, lingerie supervisor Sharon Newall culminates a month-long fundraising effort by getting her head shaved live in the store by local hairdresser Katie Wright.

She said: “'I have been thinking about doing this for two years and finally plucked up the courage. I want people to see that it is just hair and it will grow back.”

As well as raising money for the breast cancer charity, Sharon will donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust who provide wigs and hair pieces to children who have lost their hair as a result of cancer.

Her brave moves follows that of two male employees who volunteered to have their legs waxed under the gaze of spectators in the store.

Restaurant manager Josh Bridle, and sales adviser Rob Barrie had their legs waxed by beauticians Annie Rose and Rebecca from Zen Beauty.

Josh said: “It was a pleasure, despite the pain on my face, to be a part of a fantastic fundraiser.

“My girlfriend’s mum is someone I look up to a lot, she beat breast cancer and is one of the bravest people I know.

“I’m just glad we could raise some money to help the fight. I now look forward to moisturising my legs for the coming fortnight.”

As well as hair removal, Debenhams has been raising money through till point collections and a ‘Wore it Pink’ weekend for the staff which raised £200.

Away from the shop floor, two fundraising nights have been organised at Ayya over the weekend.

Tonight will see a band night from 8pm followed by a Halloween fun night from 7pm on Sunday including a quiz, pumpkin carving, a raffle and music from The Leggomen.

In store charity sponsor Zoe Chipp said: “Debenhams is committed to raising money for excellent causes throughout the year through the Debenhams Foundation.

“Breast Cancer Now the UKs largest Breast Cancer Charity. It is a charity that is close to our heart in store and our team have really pulled out all the stops for our last events of the year.”

Sharon will be getting her head shaved in the store’s cosmetic department at 3pm tomorrow in a bid to raise £750 for Breast Cancer Now.
