NOTHING was a bridge too far for a group of fundraisers as they came together to raise money for charity and support a friend who lost her eye to cancer.

A sixth annual bridge day was recently held at the Reynolds Memorial Building on Dorchester Road in Weymouth to raise money for Ocumel.

Ocumel raises money for anyone affected by ocular melanoma, a form of eye cancer.

This year's event raised £1,015.50 for the charity.

The event was started in 2011 after Jenny Pierce was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma the previous year.

Gene Hill, a lifelong friend of Jenny’s parents took it upon herself to organise the annual event to raise money for charities relating to eye cancer.

Jenny said that with the use of her contacts Gene has been able to fill all the available tables for the last six years and help raise money for the charities.

Jenny’s mum Val along with her friend Genny Birchill have also provided cakes and sandwiches to help make the event a success with a raffle also held to help raise funds.

Sadly, this will be the last event but over the past six years it has raised more than £7000 for Ocumel and another charity.

In addition to Ocumel, funds in the past have gone to the Eye Tumour Research Fund at Liverpool Royal United Hospital, one of a handful of dedicated units in the country and where Jenny still receives treatment.

Jenny lost her left eye to the disease but the cancer did not spread.

This is the last year that it will be held.

The event has always been held at the memorial building with Jenny thanking caretaker Sam Hoskins.

Jenny now lives in Bristol but grew up and went to school in Weymouth.

She said: “I tell anyone who will listen about what happened to me as it was asymptomatic. It all followed a routine eye examination and the treatment I had may well have extended my life expectancy and even saved my life. Whilst not wanting to alarm anyone it is very important that people have regular eye examinations."

She added that what everyone had done for the charities has “touched and humbled her”.
