The coastguard was launched after a report of a possible person in the water.
A member of the public called the coastguard after sighting the person and Wyke Regis coastguard team was launched yesterday.
It was spotted in the bay between the Old Pier Bandstand and the Jubilee Clock.
Once on the scene, the first informant pointed to the object which, after observing through binoculars turned out to be a buoy.
The coastguard said the individual did the right thing by calling 999.
