IT'S not just trains arriving at Upwey station next week.

The station is to get a large new name sign – known as a 'running-in' board – in a project led by rail campaigners.

In Victorian times railway stations would usually have large boards positioned to let passengers know that the train was 'running in' to its destination.

The Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership has begun to revive this tradition at stations along the Weymouth to Bristol line, as these large boards particularly help first time visitors, those with a visual impairment who can find smaller modern signs difficult to read and those with a hearing impairment who may miss on train announcements.

Members of the Friends of Upwey Station, South West Trains, Dorset County Council and the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership will gather on Tuesday to see the new board unveiled.

The Upwey board is unique as the designers undertook detailed research of the original Victorian board which once graced the station before producing a high quality replica.

The project has been jointly funded by station owner and Weymouth-Waterloo operator South West Trains, and the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership which works with communities to enhance and promote the Bristol to Weymouth railway, supported by Dorset County Council and the Dorset Councils Partnership.
