Organisers of a quirky annual Dorset event are confident a change of venue this year will pay off.

The Dorset Knob Throwing Festival is to be held this year for the first time at Kingston Maurward College rather than at Cattistock, which has hosted the event in the past.

It is one of a range of events over the May Day bank holiday weekend.

The Dorset Knob Throwing Festival takes place tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am to 4pm.

Katharine Wright, the chairman of the festival’s volunteer-run committee, said: “It is a real shame the festival has had to leave Cattistock, but we believe this will allow it to continue and grow in the future.”

She added that the festival had outgrown the village and was not accessible enough considering how large the event had become.

These include knob throwing, knob eating, knob painting, a knob & spoon race, guess the weight of the big knob, knob darts and a knob pyramid.

Running alongside the event is the Frome Valley Food Festival where there will be a chance to sample, taste and purchase a range of foods, including breads, cheeses, ciders, meats game & poultry, pies, preserves, and puddings.

There will also be chocolate, coffee and wine supplied by local businesses.

OTHER events over the bank holiday weekend include the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester, Tim and Anita Harries, hosting their final May-oral Funday on Monday, May 1, in the Borough Gardens from 2pm to 8pm.

Activities for all ages will be available, including falconry, a bouncy castle and some traditional Maypole dancing.

There will also be live music.

Blandford will be holding its annual Georgian Fayre on Monday, the largest event of its kind in southern England, from 10am to 5pm.

There will be historical re-enactments, a farmers market, a rural crafts display, a classic car show, fire juggling, a range of music and more.

This year the fayre is also reviving the barrel racing event.

In Weymouth, The Royal Standard will be hosting the 2017 Upwey Beer Festival all weekend till Monday. It will feature the best real ales and ciders from Dorset and the local area, including Bishop’s Tipple and Sheep Dip.

There will also be live music.

There will be a Tea on the Quay music festival at Rendezvous in Weymouth tomorrow between 11am and 10pm.

Performing at the event will be Toby De Krester, Nina Garcia, Tim Somerfield, Blazing Strings, Southern Sinners and others.

Also in Weymouth, The Boot Inn will be hosting two days of live music with an outdoor stage, bar and barbecue today and tomorrow.

Artists will be performing from 3pm to 9pm each day, including Rich Baxter and Minor Fret on Saturday and Tequila Mocking Bird and Freaky Boys on Sunday.

Then at the Brewery Square, in Dorchester, a street food market will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

There will be a range of cuisines available at the market, including Portuguese, Italian and Caribbean.

Specific stalls include the Urban Larder Caterers, serving up cod fritters with chipotle mayo, chorizo scotch eggs and piri piri chicken wings, and Ethics Pizzas, offering a variety of freshly cooked pizzas.
