Homes and businesses were evacuated following a gas leak in Poundbury this afternoon.

The leak on Holmead Walk was caused by a tractor mowing over a valve, leading to the closure of the road and Middle Farm Way.

An exclusion zone was set up, affecting a number of residential roads, residents and businesses.

Emergency services were called at about 1pm after residents noticed a 'strong' smell of gas.

Sergeant Mark Dent, of Dorset Police, said: "A gas pipe was hit by a tractor mowing the grass, causing a fairly large leak.

"The surrounding area was evacuated to about 50 metres for safety reasons which included businesses and residential premises. The gas has now been capped and residents will soon be let back in their homes. Tests will be done first to check there's no gas left."

A man currently working in Poundbury sent in pictures of the incident.

He said: "We were told that a grass cutter had accidently cut a valve.

"Police came immediately to block off the road and fire crews also came to make sure the area was safe.

"The ambulance came too just incase people were not feeling well.

"The homes and businesses in the area were evacuated."

A spokesperson for gas distribution company SGN said: “We were called out to a gas escape in Holmead Walk, at approximately 2pm after a third party caused damaged to our governor.

"Holmead Walk and Middle Farm Way were closed by the emergency services for a short time, but have now re-opened. We have now made safe are working hard to make a permanent repair to our damaged gas main.

"We appreciate the road closure may have affected motorists, cyclists and public transport users, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
