The Dorset Police No Excuse team have been out in full force in north Dorset this week.

The team were first tasked to attend three addresses across Gillingham, Shaftesbury and Sherborne in relation to Operation Dragoon.

The first driver had received several letters from the local community speed watch regarding speeding.

The team attended the home address and gave strong words of advice and issued the driver with its Operation Dragoon letter - stating they have been identified as a risk driver and we will be paying more attention to them.

The second driver was elderly male - aged 84 - who had been reported on several occasions driving dangerously.

Officers attended the address and spoke at length to the driver - he will be attending a driver assessment next week following a DVLA referral.

Finally the force had received reports of male driving a vehicle without insurance, MOT or tax - the driver is also being investigated for falling to stop for police.

An Operation Dragoon letter was served, again the force will be paying more attention to this driver.

A spokesman for the team said: "All three drivers were pleased we attended with one saying 'this is a wake up call - I've been bad in the past'."

The team later seized a vehicle for no insurance.

The spokesman added: "While Dealing with a mobile phone offence in Lytchett Minster, the ANPR camera picked up VW Polo without insurance.

"The driver said 'oh I don't think I have insurance I have been meaning to sort it out'. Their policy expired early July. That's six points and £300 fine."

Another stop check led to a second vehicle seizure.

The driver was breathalysed and had had no insurance on the vehicle since June. The insurance company had been pursuing driver for unpaid premiums.

Their MOT expired at the beginning of August.

They were handed six points, a £300 fine and £100 fine for no MOT.

On Thursday evening the team were tasked with patrolling the A30 due to complaints from the public in regards to speeding vehicles, in particular motorbikes.

A spokesman said: "We are pleased to say that most vehicles were driving safely and to the speed limit."

But in other areas of North Dorset officers issued numerous tickets for exceeding the speed limit, one ticket for tailgating and three tickets for using a mobile phone whilst driving.

The team also arrested two drivers for driving under the influence of cannabis.

A spokesman said: "The first driver was an 20-year-old male who stated he smokes cannabis on a daily basis. He was stopped due to exceeding the speed limit. He failed the road side drug test and was arrested.

"The second driver a 47-year-old-male was stopped on the Puddletown Bypass.

"When he was stopped he quickly jumped out of his vehicle and promptly closed his car door behind him to prevent officers smelling the £200 bag of cannabis he had just purchased.

"He admitted to smoking cannabis seven hours before being stopped.

"He was arrested for possession of cannabis, speeding and driving whilst under the influence of cannabis."
