A kebab house in Weymouth has been nominated for a national award–and they need you to help them win.

Hidden Gem Kebab House, in Littlemoor Shopping Centre, has been nominated in the sixth British Kebab Awards under the category of Best Takeaway Regional.

The takeaway is owned by Cem Ciftlik and his wife Victoria, and they found out last Tuesday that they had been nominated.

The kebab house has been picked in the top 100 out of over 2000 kebab houses and takeaways across the country.

Voting is scored as 2 points per customer, and 250 points for MPs and councillors, as well as 50 points per star they have (which is five).

Because of this, the couple have called out to local MP Richard Drax to cast a vote, as well as Cllr Gill Taylor to convince other councillors to help with the cause.

For the couple, it’s been received extremely well, and is proof that all their hard work has paid off.

Victoria said: “It’s almost been an eight-year dream, to turn an old toilet into a kebab house.

“We’ve really built this up to be a good place, and we have got a good response.

“The fact we are nominated is the best recognition we could get.”

Hidden Gem was originally a derelict toilet block at Littlemoor Shopping Centre, which was closed in 2012 due to the annual maintenance costs.

May will mark three years since the shop opened, and owner Cem is happy that it is being recognised by the public.

He said: “It was all very exciting, and all of our hard work and challenges faced from other people in the last five years was worth it.

“Since opening, we have built a good relationship with our customers, both local and from afar, with people coming from as far as Cerne Abbas and Portland just to enjoy our kebabs.

“My mum and dad took a loan out in Turkey to help us with costs, and May will mark three years since the shop opened.

“It’s our dream to be recognised by the public, the British Kebab awards is a big organisation, and we didn’t expect the nomination.

“It’s like an Oscar nomination.”

Voting closes on January 22.

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, March 12.
