A FISH and chip shop owner who came closer to winning an award is urging other fryers to enter a competition to find the nation’s favourite chippy.

John and Karen Pearce of Alf’s Fish and Chips at Lanehouse in Weymouth were finalists in Britain’s Favourite Family Chippy Award 2011 organised by soft drinks firm Ben Shaws.

Now in its third year, the award celebrates family-run chip shops across the UK and the vital role they play within their communities.

The winner, who will be announced in September, will receive a trophy, a £500 donation to treat their customers and a night away including dinner at a renowned fish restaurant.

Mr Pearce said: “We were delighted to be named one of three finalists last year. The response since has been fantastic and we have also seen an increase in trade as a result. We will certainly be entering again this year.”
