Weymouth Carnival organisers are revving up for a spectacular summer show.

More details have been announced about the August extravaganza which will be held just a few days after the Olympic Games’ closing ceremony.

Organisers from the town’s rotary clubs are hoping the summer fun will continue on Wednesday, August 15 as the resort hosts one of the biggest charity carnivals in the south.

There may be no Red Arrows this year as the famous RAF aerobatics team failed to include the carnival in their diary, but another top, as yet unnamed, aerial event has been lined up along with the Red Devils display team and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The aerial event, which still has to be confirmed, is billed as Europe’s ‘largest and most spectacular aerobatic formation display team.’ New ground features for this year include a parade of 200 motorcycles and an all-day fun zone on the Esplanade.

Road closures have been approved for the zone between East Street and the King’s Statue which will include dancers, jugglers, street entertainers, clowns, stilt walkers and other colourful characters.

It will also act as the race area.

Entertainers who would like to be part of the fun zone are encouraged to contact carnival organisers.

Local bands and other performers will play on a beach stage and a star of this year’s Weymouth pantomime will be in town to join in the fun.

Weymouth Carnival chairman Roger Hogbin said: “Plans for the 2012 Carnival are racing ahead for a very special day on August 15, just three days after the Olympic closing ceremony.

“The programme for the day has now been set, with the day kicking off at 10am with the crowning of the carnival queen followed by the fabulous Red Devils parachuting onto the beach.

“The fun zone will be in operation for most of the day and we hope to feature lots of performances.

“Another new feature for 2012 will be 200 motorbikes in a procession, setting off from Lodmoor at around 5.45pm, proceeding down to the Pavilion, and returning to Lodmoor.

“This will be a very noisy and spectacular parade and should not be missed.”

Procession entries are now also being taken. Once again, floats will go one-way from the Pavilion to Lodmoor.

The day will end with a firework display followed by the grand draw when the first prize will be a new car.

Details of the carnival queen competition will be announced soon.

The Carnival Ball will be held in the Pavilion Ocean Room on Saturday, August 18.
