POLICE are warning motorists not to leave valuables in their cars at local beauty spots after a spate of thefts.

Three handbags were stolen from vehicles in three separate incidents on Sunday.

A car was broken into at Eggardon Hill between 11.30am and 12.15pm and the bag was taken from underneath the front seat.

Thieves then forced open the passenger door of a green Citroen Saxo between 1.30pm and 2.30pm at Ashley Chase in Abbotsbury and a handbag was stolen from the boot.

The third incident occurred near Hardy's Monument between 2pm and 3pm and saw a handbag stolen from an insecure vehicle as well as a quantity of cash from a purse.

Inspector Les Fry, of Dorchester Police, said he was keeping an open mind as to whether the thefts were linked but urged motorists to make sure they do not leave valuable in their cars.

He said: “Please leave things at home or take them with you and make sure you lock your car.”

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Dorset Police on 101.
