A GROUP of talented students from West Dorset got their own “Oscar” at a prestigious film competition.

Media students from Bridport’s Sir John Colfox School picked up the award at the Kids Witness News film competition.

There were 15 schools competing for five awards, which were presented at a ceremony in Redditch in the West Midlands.

The Colfox team was nominated in four of the categories, which was more than any of the other schools and walked away with Best Picture and Sound for their documentary entry.

The judges’ verdict was that it was a highly professional piece and with shots that would not be out of place in a real BBC film.

It was the first year that Colfox students entered the competition and for the film they interviewed sports stars and travelled to Poole, Taunton and London.

As award winners, the team were invited to attend the World finals at The Connaught Rooms in London for dinner and to watch the awards show and the work of all the finalists.

The winners of the UK Grand Prix were Knox Academy from East Lothian with a film entitled Knife Crime. But the West Dorset contingent were told they came a very close second with a final six votes to five for the winner.

Team member Eden Taylor said: “It was the best experience I could have hoped for. It made me realise that I would like to have a career in the media and possibly editing when I am older.

“If I had the opportunity to do it again next year I wouldn’t hesitate.”
