TRAFFIC came to a standstill as emergency services battled to save Lewis at 2.45 pm on Friday.

Police shut Newstead Road near to the Boot Hill junction as crews from two ambulances went to the scene.

An air ambulance was called but a decision was taken for it not to land and Lewis was transferred to hospital by road.

Dozens of onlookers watched on in shock with many rushing to the scene to try and help.

Witnesses said that that the 53-year-old bus driver, who is from Weymouth, was in tears after the collision.

One said: “It was just awful. We were there when it happened.

“The emergency services were brilliant and our hearts go out to all who were involved.

“To see the poor bus driver in tears was heartbreaking.”

Police said that paramedics and members of the public administered first aid at the scene.

Officers are investigating the collision and are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to get in touch. No-one has been arrested.

A First Bus spokesman confirmed that one of its drivers was involved in the incident.

He added that the company was ‘shocked and saddened’ to hear of Lewis’s death and sent its thoughts to his friends and family.
