GRIEVING friends took to Facebook to share their memories of Lewis. Scott Hamlin said: “I would like to say rest in peace to little Lewis Monks from Weymouth, grew up knowing this kid would go far in BMX and he did.”

Josh Lewis wrote: “RIP Lewis Monks thoughts go out to you and your family. You will be missed by many you were an amazing BMX rider you'll never be forgotten.”

Amy Allsopp wrote: “So so so sad. Can’t believe it. He was such an awesome character and will be missed by so many. Always made me laugh when I saw him. RIP mate, xxxxx”

Paul Avfc Mills said: “RIP big guy. Such an amazing lad thank you for the great times we shared together. I promise you I will never forget them and I will never forget you!”

Aaron Baber wrote: “May you forever slay that half pipe in the sky! Best rider I know! Take it easy my man! X” Sam Brotherwood added: “Great rider, great kid. Real sad day.”

• LEWIS’S death has touched the hearts of many residents – with many people who did not know Lewis sending their condolences to his family.

At the scene, one note on some flowers read: “Please accept my sincere sorrow at the loss of Lewis.

“I did not know him but he touched my heart. From someone who tried to help but could do no more.”

On Facebook, Jackie Pearson said: “Was so sad to hear that this town lost yet another life yesterday. “I’m afraid I didn't know u or ur family but it's heartbreaking all the same. “Heaven has gained another angel RIP sweetie :-( xx.”

Councillor Sandy West, a community colleague at the Asda store near to where the accident took place, said: “It is very sad. “My thoughts are with the family. It is a real tragedy.”

One man, who laid flowers at the scene in the rain yesterday, said: “I was here when it happened. I’ve got children myself. I just can’t imagine what his family is going through.”
