STAFF at a Weymouth school will be putting their knowledge to the test at the Dorset Echo’s quiz and curry night.

The team from Wey Valley School’s maths department is entering a team of six, ‘Nice as Pi,’ for the July 20 fundraiser at Weymouth College.

Places are filling up fast for the evening, which will feature a quiz, a curry meal for all participants in the interval, a raffle and music from local singer-songwriter Sarah de Warren.

Dorchester Town Crier Alistair Chisholm will be the quizmaster.

The Echo is urging anyone who wishes to take part to enter a team or sign up as an individual.

All money raised will go to the Will Mackaness Trust, the Echo’s chosen good cause for this year.

The Weymouth charity arranges for all youngsters to take part in water sports and gives financial support to those who have an aptitude for nautical activities. It gives youngsters who would not normally have the chance to try watersports, an opportunity to gain in confidence and improve their teamwork skills.

The trust was set up in memory of Will Mackaness, a Wey Valley schoolboy who died from a brain tumour at the age of 16.

His mum Pam Govier, a Wey Valley teacher, works closely with the charity. Some of the Nice as Pi team remember teaching former Wey Valley head boy Will, who loved watersports.

Head of maths Jules Gibbs said: “Will was an exceptional young man. He would be so proud of what Pam and the Will Mackaness Trust have achieved with young people in the borough.”

Mrs Gibbs added that she hoped as many people as possible can come to the evening and support the cause.

“We hope that everyone supports this fundraising event.”

Generous reader Richard Smith of Dorchester has donated £100. The evening begins at 7pm. To book your place on the quiz call 01305 830995 or email joanna.davis@dorsetecho .co.uk Places must be booked beforehand and paid in advance. Cheques should be payable to the Dorset Echo and sent to Joanna Davis, Dorset Echo, Hampshire Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 9XD. Cash can be brought to the Echo offices in Weymouth and Dorchester.
